  • Introduction

    Samuel H. Dix, a resident of Ohio, was a soldier in the United States Civil War. In 1863, he was discharged from service and married on February 7, 1865 he married Elizabeth Ann Hogue. Migrating west to Oregon in 1878, the family settled on the banks of Milk Creek, about a mile Northeast of Colton, Clackamas County, Oregon, By the time he passed in 1908, he had seven children, thirteen grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He was well known throughout Colton, and in other neighboring communities, like Elwood. He took ill during the last four months of his life, becoming bed-ridden the last four days of his life. The official cause of death was listed as 'Senility'. Mildred Emily Freeman Axmaker recounted a poem that Grandpa Dix would recite to tell all of the names of his boys -- "It's no use (Uncle Ulysses) for os (Uncle Oscar) to plant oats (Uncle Otis) because the jaybirds (Uncle Jay [Jehu]) will (Uncle William) eat them all up."

    Samuel H. Dix served in the Civil War as a Union soldier. Four days before his 26th birthday, on December 7, 1861, Samuel mustered in as a private into Company E, 80th Regiment, Ohio Infantry. After nearly three years of active duty, Samuel was discharged on September 3, 1863, as a private, at St. Louis, Missouri. Samuel's unit fought in the following battles during his time of service: Corinth, Mississippi (Siege of) - April 30 to May 30, 1862. Farmington, Mississippi - May 9, 1862. Corinth, Mississippi - October 4, 1862. Raymond, Mississippi - May 12, 1863. Jackson, Mississippi - May 14, 1863. Vicksburg, Mississippi (Siege of) - May 18 to July 14, 1863. (The siege at Vicksburg, cut the Confederate line in half and secured a major victory for the Union Army.) Sources: 80th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, .
