Bowers, Samuel H. Jr.

Samuel H. Bowers Jr., 58, Rt. 3, died at 12:02 p.m. Monday (March 29, 1982) at Wells Community Hospital, Bluffton, after an illness of six months.

Mr. Bowers was employed for the last 13 years as custodian at Union School. He was also the owner and operator of Bowers Antiques. Mr Bowers was an army veteran of World War 2, and was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church.

He was born March 27, 1924 in Huntington to Samuel H. and Flossie Ingmire Bowers Sr., and his marriage was on May 5, 1943 in Huntington to the former Mary Jane Kline, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Michael Bowers, Huntington, Alan Bowers, Fort Wayne and Kent Bowers, Syracuse; two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Kathy) Bowman, Huntington and Shelley Bowers, at home; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Wilmer Bowers, Convoy, Ohio and Walter Bowers, Huntington, and two sisters, Berniece Coble, Huntington and Eileen Saylor, Fort Wayne.

Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hart Funeral Home, where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, with Rev. Patrick Fulbright and Rev. Wayne D. Pierce officiating.

Burial will be in Union Cemetery, and preferred memorials are to the Huntington County Cancer Society or the Zion United Methodist Church.

Services for Samuel Bowers Jr. were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Hart Funeral Home, with Rev. Patrick Fulbright and Rev. Wayne D. Pierce officiating.

Pallbearers were Fred Melching, Larry Bowers, Robert Rice, William Ponizious, Thomas Wilbur and Robert Crispen. Burial was in Union Cemetery.

In 1924, in the year that Samuel Howard Bowers Jr. was born, J. Edgar Hoover, at the age of 29, was appointed the sixth director of the Bureau of Investigation by Calvin Coolidge (which later became the Federal Bureau of Investigation). The Bureau had approximately 650 employees, including 441 Special Agents. A former employee of the Justice Department, Hoover accepted his new position on the proviso that the bureau was to be completely divorced from politics and that the director report only to the attorney general.

In 1948, when he was 24 years old, on May 14th, the State of Israel was proclaimed by David Ben-Gurion, who became Israel's first Premier, and the U.S. officially recognized Israel. That evening, Egypt launched an air assault on Israel.

In 1958, Samuel was 34 years old when on March 24th, Elvis Presley was inducted into the United States Army. Although he could have served in Special Services as an entertainer, he chose to become a regular soldier. Almost everyone thought it would be the end of his career - it wasn't.

In 1960, when he was 36 years old, on September 26th, the first televised debate for a Presidential campaign in the United States - Kennedy vs Nixon - was held. Seventy million people watched the debate on TV. The debate pre-empted the very popular Andy Griffith Show.

In 1982, in the year of Samuel Howard Bowers Jr.'s passing, on June 30th, time ran out on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The Amendment had only received 35 of the necessary 38 state ratifications. First sent to the states in 1972, the Amendment stated that "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex".
