Sarah Adams Reynolds was born on January 6, 1809 in Wadmalaw Island, Charleston County, South Carolina United States to William Reynolds and Sarah Saxby Adams Reynolds, and had siblings Elizabeth Chaplin Reynolds, Henrietta Catherine Reynolds, Bernard Adams Reynolds, William Reynolds Jr, States Reynolds, Elvira Letitia Reynolds, Julius Cornelius Reynolds, Julia Emma Reynolds, and Benjamin Reynolds. She married William Sams, and had children William Berners Sams, Catherine DeVeaux Sams, Sarah Reynolds Sams, Henrietta Reynolds Sams, John Hanahan Sams, and Mikell Seabrook Sams. Sarah Reynolds died at age 16 years old on December 1, 1825 in Beaufort, Beaufort County.

In 1809, in the year that Sarah Adams Reynolds was born, on December 30th, Boston Massachusetts banned the wearing of masks at balls. Boston was following many other places - including England - by banning masked balls, which were considered to contribute to loose morals. After all, with masks, you couldn't tell the class of the person or even their gender! The law was extended in 1849 and repealed in 1963.
