Selina (Watts) Dovaston of Ararat, Ararat Rural City County, VIC Australia was born on June 10, 1870 in Ararat to William Henwood Watts and Ann Turner Watts. She had siblings Mary Ann Watts, William Thomas Watts, Ellen Watts, Elizabeth Talbot Watts, William James Watts, Harriet May Watts, Joseph John Watts, Nelson George Stanley Watts, Jessie Beatrice Watts, and Ruth Bray Watts. She married Alfred Ernest Dovaston in 1891, and had children Lucy Mary Ann (Dovaston) Madex, William Samuel Dovaston, Alfred George Dovaston, Lillian Selina Dovaston, Annie Dovaston, Sydney Joseph Dovaston, Madge Jessie Dovaston Shalders, and Wilfred John Dovaston. Selina Dovaston died at age 76 years old on March 29, 1947 in Ararat.

In 1870, in the year that Selina Watts Dovaston was born, on March 31st, Thomas Mundy Peterson was the first African-American male who voted in an election - a local election about the town charter. Peterson, a school principal, was also the first to hold elected office and the first to sit on a jury.

In 1886, she was 16 years old when on June 13th, the "Great Vancouver Fire" destroyed most of Vancouver, British Columbia. A small brush fire got out of control and spread to the rest of the city. Dozens of people died and it was only after the fire that money was raised for a fire hall. The local Squamish tribe rescued people who had jumped into bodies of water to escape the conflagration.
