A tribute to one of my favorite bosses of all time: Shane Fross
October 5 2020 by David Ramsden-Wood

As those of you who have read the book know, I changed the names of the participants to protect the innocent (and not so innocent). But, for those of you who read this chapter and also know Shane Fross, you knew instantly I was writing about him.

I met Shane when he came to Calgary in… what… 2004? He was exactly as I described. Intimidating. Bald. Loved guns. And I had no idea what to expect.

The first day on the team and as my supervisor, we had a team lunch at Malcolm’s in the basement of the building and I was instantly hooked. He talked about snakes in pipe that he caught as a summer job, his kids taking the SATs every year starting in grade 9 or 10 and doing it until grade 12 and trying to beat each other, about hailstorms in Texas and about life. One of the most impactful lessons he taught me was: it’s the group of people you work with, not the company you work for. I didn’t know that before, and he made me see and believe it after.

I love Shane. He taught you, guided you and made you, AND ME, better. For those that have worked with him over the years, you know that too. Here’s to you Shane. Thank you.

Obituary for Shane A. Fross in Broomfield, Colorado
From Tribute Archive

Shane Alan Fross was born 01-Jul-70 in Denver Colorado. He grew up in Eastern Colorado in an area called the “German Settlement”, which is North of Burlington & Bethune by about 11 miles. He is the son of James J. & Edna M. Fross of Bethune, Colorado, and brother of Susan M. Hipley of Meridian, California.

Shane graduated from Burlington High School and went on to pursue a Petroleum Engineering Degree at Colorado School of Mines. He commenced work for Anadarko Petroleum in Liberal, Kansas post-graduation where he met his wife Bridget (Knapek) Fross while she was working for the NRCS in Perryton, TX. They were married on 01-Jul-95 and moved to Houston, Texas.

Shane & Bridget have four children (James, Shaneann, Tristan, and Xavier) and suffered two miscarriages.

After a fight with cancer, Shane passed on 14-Jul-21. He was preceded in death by his father James J. Fross, nephew Brandon Weber & two unborn children.

Shane enjoyed a career in the Oil/Gas Industry working 28+ years with Anadarko Petroleum and 2+ years with Whiting Petroleum. During this period the family lived in Texas, Canada, England, Wyoming, Montana and Colorado and met many wonderful people associated with the industry.

Shane’s hobbies were eclectic and varied – as he tried to learn a new skill every year. Among his favorites over the years were reloading, amateur radio (KC5VPT), fishing, painting, marble carving, and clay shooting.

Living by a personal and professional motto of “Live a life that at the time of my death anybody I have worked with can look into the eyes of my children and say with full sincerity that I made a difference in their life”; he tried to enjoy life to it's fullest at all times.

A Funeral Mass for Shane will be held on Monday, July 26, 2021 at 11:15 a.m. There will be a Rosary prayed ahead of Mass for those who wish to attend. A reception will follow the service and then Shane will be laid to rest at Sacred Heart of Mary Cemetery in Boulder, Colorado.
