My grandfather was a slave for the first nine years of his life. At the age of 18 he lost his arm in a corn gin. Concentrated on his education and became a school teacher Was married twice to Annie ? and Lena Bland. Lena was my grandmother. He also had a brother named Sam who was severely burned when he was young and died at an early age. Shepard was the only black teacher in Robertsville, MO and children walked to the one room building from miles around. He became blind in his latter years and did not get to physically see his last 4 children; all born in his late 70's. The last one was a daughter born at age 81.
