Introduction

Sherwood's parents were William Joel Moran, 1843-1919 and Margaret S. "Maggie" Ford. He had sibling Margarita Ford Moran, born 1882. In the 1900 census, the family was living in Brooklyn NY and had a servant, Fanny Bush, living with them. Father William was a government employee and the children were going to school, Margarita, Sherwood and Ford, all in the 9th grade. In the 1900 federal census and the 1905 NY census, 2 sons were listed in the family - Sherwood and Ford, with the same date of birth. Twins? He married Ursul Mildred Reeves, 1890-1967, on June 30 1915, in Redlands CA. According to the newspaper announcement, Sherwood lived in both CA and NY. They had children Sherman Reeves Moran, Donald Ford Moran, and Barbara Moran. According to his WW1 draft registration card, he was married with 1 child and was a missionary for the American Board Missionary in Okayama Japan. He was medium height, slender, had light hair and gray eyes. Perhaps not surprising for a man who was a missionary in Japan for many years and had a masters in philosophy (see education and religion below), Sherwood volunteered for the Marines in WW2 and developed humane techniques for questioning Japanese POWs.
