Sidney Richard Broome 1826 - 1898

Sidney Richard Broome was born in 1826 to John Broome and Caroline (Matson) Broome, and had siblings Thomas Hilder Broome, Mary Culmer Broome, Elizabeth Burville Broome, William Cavil Broome, Frank Skelton Broome, and Caroline Maria (Broome) Moyle. Sidney Broome died at age 72 years old in 1898.

In 1826, in the year that Sidney Richard Broome was born, on March 10th, João VI, King of Portugal and the former Emperor of Brazil, died after a short illness. Six days earlier, the King had become ill after eating at the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon. An investigative autopsy in the late 1990's discovered that he had been killed by arsenic poisoning - having enough arsenic in his body to kill two people.

In 1832, Sidney was merely 6 years old when by February 12th, a cholera epidemic in London claimed at least 3,000 lives - it eventually killed 6,536. The epidemic spread to France and North America later in the year. Cholera is spread through contaminated food and water but at the time, it was thought to be spread by a "miasma” - a bad smell - in the air.
