Sorrow reigns at No 40, Pinfold -street, Loughborough, where only seven months ago was a scene of great rejoicing, for ex - Private Sidney Smith, who in February was repatriated after nearly five years as a prisoner of war in Germany, died in Loughborough Hospital on Saturday. When Mr., Smith arrived home from Germany, waiting to greet him was his widowed mother who had been an invalid for many years, shortly afterwards she died. He leaves a wife, formerly Miss, Violet Coles, Claycross, Derbyshire, to whom he was married only six months ago. There are also sisters and brothers. Sid was a true soldier, being in the Territorial Army since1934. He was taken prisoner in April 1940, in Norway, and during the period of his captivity made no less than nine attempts to escape, once succeeding in getting nearly halfway across the Baltic in a motor launch, before having the ill luck to be picked up by a German Cruiser.

In 1919, in the year that Sidney Smith was born, in June, the Treaty of Versailles - officially ending World War I - was signed. The European Allies demanded "compensation by Germany for all damage done to the civilian population of the Allies and their property by the aggression of Germany by land, by sea and from the air.” The requirement of compensation is seen by most as the reason for the collapse of the German economy and gave rise to the rule of Hitler.

In 1922, by the time he was merely 3 years old, on June 22, coal miners in Herrin Illinois, were on strike (coal miners had been on strike nationally since April 1). The striking miners were outraged at the strikebreakers (scabs) that the company had brought in and laid siege to the mine. Three union workers were killed when gunfire was exchanged. The next day, union miners killed 23 strikebreakers and mine guards. No one, on either side, ever faced jail time.
