Simon was born in the Netherlands and his Dutch name was Siebe Herrema. He immigrated with his parents to the USA when he was 3 years old, but he could still speak Dutch as an adult because the Grand Rapids Michigan area was so full of Dutch people that Dutch was spoken in the homes, schools and in the churches. He never had a middle name, so he thought it might be nice to pick out something for himself and he took the name Cyrus. He signed everything S.C. Herrema and went by the name of Si or Cy, we never knew which when it was being spoken. He had a good head for business and owned multiple houses that he rented out, and then he started an office supply business in downtown Grand Rapids called Economy Office Supply. It catered to businesses who wanted office supplies delivered to them, although he also had walk in trade. I remember being a little girl going to visit his business and can remember the squeaking wooden floors, the smell of ink and paper and leather office chairs. It seemed like a wonderful place full of pencils and staplers, and I was proud of him. He and my grandmother Tillie Piersma Herrema raised 6 children who had many grandchildren and great grandchildren. When I would stay overnight, the first thing I heard was my grandfather whistling in the morning. He always whistled tunes and was a happy man. As my grandmother was making food in the kitchen I remember him coming up to her and giving her a light swat on the behind and saying, "You're a good woman Tillie!"
