He also married Huldah (Thomas) Boyd on December 24, 1835 in Adams County. He and Catherine Beatrice (Miller) Boyd married on September 11, 1862 in Adams County. They had children Ida Mae (Boyd) Murray, Smith Miller Boyd, Mark Evans Boyd, and John R Boyd. Smith's partner was Caroline Lumpkin, and they had children Vina (Boyd) Robinson, Fannie (Boyd) Gordon, and Ellen (Boyd) Buck.

In 1808, in the year that Smith Boyd was born, on February 11th, anthracite coal - the hardest form of coal - was first burned as fuel by Jesse Fell, in Pennsylvania. He burned the coal on an open air grate. This discovery led to the use of coal as the key fuel source of the industrial revolution in the United States.

In 1811, on July 9th, British explorer, surveyor, and fur trader David Thompson posted a notice at the junction of the Columbia River and the Snake River - in modern-day Washington- claiming the area for the United Kingdom and stating the intention of the North West Company to build a trading post there.
