    Sophie C Grygorcewicz Maynard Birth: Aug. 15, 1927 New London County Connecticut, USA Death: Nov. 22, 2011 Connecticut, USA PRESTON - Sophie C. Maynard, 84, of School House Rd, formerly of Norwich and Monroe, Michigan, died on Tuesday, November 22, 2011. On August 15, 1927 she was born in Norwich, CT the daughter of the late Frank and Stella (Staniukiewicz) Grygorcewicz. Sophie was raised in Norwich and at a young age began working on the family's farm in Preston. She later worked at Araylic in Norwich and then at King-Seeley Thermos where she and her sister Mary Ann Biziewski won a prize for coming up with the slogan "Polly-Red-Top" to describe a closure device for the thermos bottle. After leaving King-Seeley she graduated from the New London School of Hairdressing and opened the Maynard Beauty Shop in Norwichtown, which she owned and operated for over 30 years. She was married to Arthur W. Maynard on October 18, 1952 at St. Joseph Church in Norwich. They enjoyed a loving marriage until his death in September of 1998. Prior to moving to Michigan, Sophie was a faithful parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Norwich for many years. Painting, embroidering and reading horoscopes were a few of her many hobbies and interests. She also enjoyed Polish music and dances, going out to dinner, shopping and traveling. Her greatest joy came from being a great-grandmother and spending time with her great-grandchildren Isabella, Grace, Safire and Amber Jean as well as her newest great-grandson Paul, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Susan Marie Rose and her husband Timothy of Monroe, Michigan; sisters Mary Ann Biziewski of Norwich and Frances Ann Mazzella and her husband Sam of Preston; grandchildren, Daniel Rose, Nathan Rose, Paul Rose and wife April and Brian Harper and wife Shannon; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews, Richard E. Biziewski, Carol E. Rynkiewicz and companion Graig Butts, Stephanie Biziewski, John J. Rynkiewicz, Jr., Gary and Joanne Mazzella, Anthony Mazzella; and her pet dog and faithful companion "Skipper". Sophie was pre-deceased by her daughter Lois Harper; sister Blanche G. Rynkiewicz; brother-in-law John J. Rynkiewicz, Sr. and nephew Roy Mazzella. The funeral will assemble on Monday at 8AM at the Woyasz & Son Funeral Home, 141 Central Ave, Norwich, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9AM at Sts. Peter & Paul Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. at the funeral home. Donations in her memory are being accepted c/o Frances Ann Mazzella, 5 School House Rd., Preston, CT 06365 to be used to establish a scholarship at the Norwich Vocational High School to be given to a student attending a beauty academy.
