Staton E Smith of Gerrardstown, Berkeley County, WV was born on June 2, 1930 to Staton Eutaw Smith and Sally Elizabeth (Richmond) Smith. He had a sister Dakota smith markley. He married Airetta Arvella (Barrett) Smith in 1953, and had a child James Edgar Smith. Staton Smith died at age 69 years old on September 11, 1999 at At his home in Gerrardstown, and was buried on September 18, 1999 at Bunker Hill Cemetery in Bunker Hill.

Introduction

Staton Edgar Smith was born to Staton Eutaw Smith & Sally Elizabeth Richmond Smith. Edgar had 17 siblings. He met and fell head over heels in love with a very special young lady, Airetta "Gail" Arvella Barrett and soon after the two were married. Edgar & Gail had 11 children. 6 sons; James Edgar, Jonathan Andrew, Ricky Dale, Jeffrey Lynn, Michael Wayne and Staton Allen. 5 daughters; Judith Ann, Shirley Faye, Angelia Elaine, Bonnie Jean and Barbara Lynn. Times were hard & tough but Edgar made sure they never went without and Gail made sure no one ever went hungry. They never met a stranger, you were family. Their motto was always, "More the merrier!" Edgar and Gail enjoyed family and friends visiting, shooting the breeze. There were never a time when their nest were empty. Both enjoyed life on the farm, gardening, butchering-the simple life. They loved their many, many grandchildren and always had their farmhouse full of them and they cherished every minute of it. Although Edgar and Gail had a happy marriage, blessed with lots of children/grandchildren, and their families that didn't mean they didn't have their fair share of struggles, heartache, and tragedies. They were devastated with the loss of three grandbabies in the most tragic way and almost lost their daughter, Shirley. Their son Jeffrey was hit by an automobile and left for dead. By the grace of God he lived for 16 years after, but it took a toll on his already declining health. Their firstborn, James, passed away at 36 due to a heart attack. The loss of his son was something Edgar never could completely accept nor cope with.

Back in those days boys usually did not go to school past the 3rd grade. It was known and expected that the boys would quit school to work to help support the family. Edgar worked as a laborer and a farmer.
