  • Obituary

Grover Cleveland died at his home at 8:40 this morning, in the seventy-second year of his age. The announcement of his death was made to the public in the following bulletin, which was posted on the door of his residence: 'Grover Cleveland died at 8:40 o'clock this morning, at his home in Princeton, N.J.' Ex-President Cleveland had been ill for several months with a form of dropsy, and while his death was not unexpected, it nevertheless caused widespread regret. Grover Cleveland was born in Caldwell, Essex County, N.J., March 18, 1837, and was the fifth in direct descent from Moses Cleveland, who emigrated to Massachusetts in 1635. His father, the Rev. Richard Falley Cleveland, was a Presbyterian clergyman, and his mother was the daughter of a Baltimore bookseller. He was graduated from Williams College in 1859, and later studied law and was admitted to the bar. He was elected Sheriff of Erie County, N.Y., in 1870, and was elected Mayor of Buffalo in 1882. In 1883 he was elected Governor of New York, and in 1884 he was nominated for President of the United States by the Democratic National Convention, and elected by a large majority over James G. Blaine, the Republican candidate. In 1892 he was again nominated by the Democrats and elected over Benjamin Harrison, the Republican candidate. After serving two terms as President, he retired to private life, but in 1897 he was elected Mayor of Greater New York, and served in that capacity for two years. The funeral arrangements have not yet been completed, but it is expected that the services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Princeton, of which Mr. Cleveland was a member. The body will be taken to Princeton this afternoon or tomorrow morning, and the services will probably be held on Thursday or Friday. The interment will be at Princeton, and will be private.
