  • Ethnicity & Family History

Teresina Maria Grazia Gabriele Svendsen A/K/A Grace Svendsen and later Grace Karlsen Stepfather: Lars Berge Karlsen's last name. Lars fixed up the apartments and paid the bills. He was a very good stepfather and our lives improved. Father: Haakon Svendsen son of Haakon Karlsen and Amanda Svendsen, later Amanda Jorgensen. Grandparents: Rosa (Rosina) and Rocco Gabriele. Many relatives changed their Italian last name from Gabriele to Gabriel which could be Jewish. There was more discrimination against Italians than Jewish in my uncle's chosen fields. The Italian grandparents were born and raised in Calabria but moved to Brooklyn after marriage. They owned their brownstone and had a grocery store. My grandfather sculpted marble angels for the cemeteries. He also sold insurance and played the trumpet. The Norwegian grandmother Amanda stayed in Gamvik, Finnmark, Norway her entire life. She married Daniel Jorgensen, a very handsome man and they had a son named Ernst. Ernst spoke to me for an hour in perfect English. His grandson Raymond Jonassen said he didn't speak a word of English which wasn't. Ernst spoke English precisely and clearly, and his language skills were above average. The Norwegian grandfather was a fisherman and apparently moved to the United States after 1911 and had a family here because all of my Gamvik cousins still live in Norway. Yet I have many DNA Norwegian cousins all over the United States including Alaska and Washington State. Our father Haakon also had progeny in Germany while he was in the Merchant Marine and spent time in Germany in the 1950s. One of his children was a girl who was adopted and later moved to England.
  • Nationality & Locations

Born and raised in Brooklyn in the Red Hook Projects until he was 12. Then he moved to Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, and back to Bay Ridge. Lived a time in Woodside, Queens. Spent many years in Florida and lived in Jacksonville for a long time and was active in the Sons of Norway. Traveled extensively in China, Korea, Japan, Bangladesh, and the Philippines. Married second wife, Po Chu Lai Svendsen, and stayed married to Po Chu until he died. Po Chu let him retire at 62, and she supported him until he died at 79. Stewart had 5 known children. He had a son with a Norwegian-American Catholic teenager. He refused to marry her, so his son was adopted by her older sister. The girl married a decent Polish Catholic man and they stayed married. Stewart was never given her married name or the name of his adopted son whom he refused to see in the hospital. He had a second son Stewart Kristian and a daughter Susann with Mary Ann Svendsen whom he married. He had two more daughters Synthia and Sandra. Their mother came to New York at 15 to better herself. Stewart seduced her, impregnated her twice, and then abandoned her on the road in Missouri when she was about 18 years old with two little kids. He said their mother was Native American but his daughters have zero Native American DNA.
  • Early Life & Education

Manual Training in Brooklyn. He quit school to join the Air Force. Then he quit the Air Force but pretended he didn't.
  • Military Service

Stewart joined the Air Forces. In order to get out of the Air Force, Stewart said he was gay and involved other Airmen; so their careers were immediately ruined. He spent years trying to correct this "confession" as a mere misunderstanding. His records were in a building that burned to the ground so his discharge was changed. He liked to brag (even to his closest friends) about his heroism in the Air Force during the Vietnam War which of course was a myth.
  • Professional Career

He was an expert in Quality Control.

  • Obituary

Stewart's wife gave him a short obituary. She was in charge. I was notified by a one-sentence text from Po-Chu his devoted wife. "Stewart died at 2:40 this afternoon." A woman friend of the family who rescued me at the age of four said that Stewart and my mother drove a hundred miles to her house to lie to her about me. She was 93 and said she wouldn't die until I found her. I gave her a beautiful tribute. Now that everybody in my family is dead, I can have closure and avoid a tribe of people who because of jealousy made my life hell with their lies at every opportunity. I was robbed by Stewart, my twin brother, every time he visited me. He stole my mother's insurance policies for my brother John and me at a time when we were both middle-aged and broke. He took the $20,000 and put it toward his NJ Mortgage. He charged John thousands of dollars to have his urn in his mausoleum. John and I never stopped working. Stewart sent me an urn and he died.

My Dad, Stewart
My Dad was gentle, funny, gregarious, creative and talented, and very much loved by his family.
He had a child like way about him. So he was quirky, and silly.
He loved stuffed animals, rubber duckies, and kitchy
Oddities to display, that really showed off his personality. I get these qualities from him, and I'm proud of it.
He was notoriously cheap,
Digging through dumpsters, thrift stores, estate sales and flea markets.
He would ask for Seltzer water, gratis, or "on the house" everywhere he went.
He famously, to family and friends, would reach over and nab food off everyone else's plate. Prompting my brother to buy him a telescoping fork as a gift.
My Father, got into the pool with my kids and played with them there.
He was a cool and caring Grandpa.
Until he got tired of young boys climbing on his back, and tell the boys to get their "s********" off him and go play
