Stewart James Lawson of Bendigo, Greater Bendigo City County, VIC Australia was born on August 12, 1882 in Kewell to Mary Anne McQueen and Archibald Lawson. He had siblings Mabel Catherine Lawson, Mary Jane Lawson, Thomas Archibald Sinclair Lawson, Harold Lawson, Herbert Leslie Lawson, Mina Elizabeth Lawson, William Archibald Lawson, and Alexander Hugh Lawson. He married Ethel May (Lindorff) Lawson in 1913, and had children Gordon Archibald Lawson, Ivy Catherine Mary Lawson, Mary Harriet Lawson, and Stuart James Lawson. Stewart Lawson died at age 82 years old on August 28, 1964 in Bendigo.

In 1882, in the year that Stewart James Lawson was born, on March 22nd, the Edmunds Act - passed by Congress - made polygamy a felony. The Act also banned "bigamous" relationships and "unlawful cohabitation", making it illegal for polygamists and those who simply lived together without marrying to vote, be on a jury, or hold a public office.

In 1920, he was 38 years old when on January 1, over 6000 people were arrested and put in prison because they were suspected of being communists. . Many had to be released in a few weeks and only 3 guns were found in their homes. The U.S. Department of Justice "red hunt" netted thousands of "radicals" and suspected "communists" and aliens were deported. But the "hunt" ended after Attorney General Palmer forecast a massive radical uprising on May Day and the day passed without incident.
