Susan (McFarland) Tolman was born in 1841. She was married to Amasa Holden Tolman on April 18, 1858, and they were together until Amasa's death on February 24, 1906. She had children Laura (Tolman) Burbank, Annie P. Tolman, Edith M. Tolman, Henry W. Tolman, Marshall W. Tolman, Atherton Tolman, James Duncan Tolman, Amelia G. Tolman, and Amasa Tolman. Susan Tolman died at age 85 years old in 1926.

In 1841, in the year that Susan (McFarland) Tolman was born, on August 16th, President John Tyler vetoed a bill to re-establish the Second Bank of the United States - America's Central Bank. President Jackson had previously dissolved the bank and Tyler's veto angered the Whig Party (his own party). Rioters gathered outside the White House and burned Tyler in effigy, threw stones at the White House, and fired guns. It may have been the most violent demonstration on White House grounds in U.S. history.

In 1886, when she was 45 years old, on October 28th, President Grover Cleveland officially dedicated the Statue of Liberty. A gift from France, the base for the statue had been built using donations from the American public. The unplanned but enthusiastic celebration after the dedication led to the first ticker tape parade.
