Tad Smith Jr. was born on May 15, 1928 at Penn, Parke County, Indiana, USA to Tad Edward Smith Sr and Rose Ellen (Stevens) Smith, and had siblings Martha Williams, James David Smith, Eva Sophia (Smith) Griffin, and Grace Ann (Smith) Kaufman. He married June Doris (Vandevender) Jones on December 16, 1944. They had children John Ellsworth Smith and Carolyn Sue (Smith). He also married Geneva Faye (Lowe) Smith in 1949. They had children Michael Edward Smith, Donna Faye Smith, Charlie Smith, and Jimmy Dale Smith. Tad Smith died at age 57 years old in October 1985 at North Hollywood, Los Angeles County, California, USA.

In 1928, in the year that Tad Edward Smith Jr. was born, Mickie Mouse was born! He first appeared in Disney's Steamboat Willie, along with Minnie. Although they were in two previous shorts, this was the first to be distributed. Steamboat Willie took advantage of the new technology and was a "talkie" - music was coordinated with the animation. It became the most popular cartoon of its day.

In 1938, by the time he was merely 10 years old, on October 30th, a Sunday, The Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcast Orson Welles' special Halloween show The War of the World's. A clever take on H.G. Wells' novel, the show began with simulated "breaking news" of an invasion by Martians. Because of the realistic nature of the "news," there was a public outcry the next day, calling for regulation by the FCC. Although the current story is that many were fooled and panicked, in reality very few people were fooled. But the show made Orson Welles' career.
