Thelma Jean (Pollock) Hobday was born in 1919 to Caroline Collie (Pressley) Pollock and Ronald Lynam Pollock. She married Arthur Harold Hobday on March 23, 1946 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, in Footscray, Maribyrnong City County, Victoria Australia, and they were married until death separated them. She had children Pamela Joy (Hobday) Johansson and Ian Hobday. Thelma Hobday died at age 60 years old on August 13, 1980.

In 1919, in the year that Thelma Jean (Pollock) Hobday was born, Indian lawyer Mahatma Gandhi initiated the Satyagraha campaigns, beginning the nonviolent resistance movement against British rule of India. Satyagraha means "holding onto truth" and the campaign for India independence, which was eventually obtained, called for "self-suffering" rather than inflicting suffering (i.e., violence) on others.

In 1923, when she was merely 4 years old, on August 2, President Warren G. Harding died in office, apparently of a heart attack. He was staying at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco after completing a nationwide tour. Suffering from cramps, indigestion, a fever and shortness of breath, his doctor thought he had food poisoning. After several days of being ill, he suddenly shuddered, slumped over, and died. There were rumors of foul play (some thought that his wife had poisoned him because of his affairs) but no evidence has ever been found.
