Thomas Greenaway 1846 - 1899

Thomas Greenaway of Clifton Hill, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia was born in 1846 in Heidelberg, City of Banyule County to John Greenaway and Elizabeth (Hayman) Greenaway. He had siblings Elizabeth Ann Greenaway Edney, Mary Greenaway, Fanny Greenaway, John Greenaway, Jane Greenaway, Alfred Greenaway, Matilda Greenaway Riddell, Sophia Alice Greenaway, and William John Greenaway. He married Alexandrina Sutherland Greenaway in 1870, and had children Nellie Roberts, Sophia (Greenaway) Lowe, Phillip Augustus Greenaway, Annie Greenaway, and Fanny Greenaway. Thomas Greenaway died at age 52 years old in March 1899 in Clifton Hill, City of Yarra County.

In 1846, in the year that Thomas Greenaway was born, on February 26th, the Liberty Bell was rung for George Washington's birthday. It is said that when it was rung, a previous crack was worsened, leading to the crack seen today. A paper of the time said that at "around noon, it was discovered that the ringing had caused the crack to be greatly extended, and that the old Independence Bell...now hangs in the great city steeple irreparably cracked and forever dumb".
