William John Greenaway 1848 - 1927

William John Greenaway of Hawthorn, City of Boroondara County, VIC Australia was born in 1848 in Ivanhoe, City of Banyule County to John Greenaway and Elizabeth (Hayman) Greenaway. He had siblings Elizabeth Ann Greenaway Edney, Mary Greenaway, Thomas Greenaway, Fanny Greenaway, John Greenaway, Jane Greenaway, Alfred Greenaway, Matilda Greenaway Riddell, and Sophia Alice Greenaway. He married Alexina Josephine (Campbell) Greenaway in 1882, and had children William John Greenaway, Charles Frank Greenaway, Daisy Greenaway, Leslie Greenaway, Lindsay Gordon Greenaway, and Ivy Iris Greenaway. William Greenaway died at age 78 years old in February 1927 in Hawthorn, City of Boroondara County.

In 1859, at the age of merely 11 years old, William was alive when on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.
