Pueblo pastor hopes TV show on his past will help others
The following appeared in The Pueblo Chieftain and was written by Jon Pompia:
A local “pastor with a past” will be featured on an upcoming episode of Discovery ID’s “Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda.”
Entitled “Justified,” the piece will focus on Kenda’s investigation into the 1993 shooting death of Tina Lovato by Darin Carroll. It will air at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
A true-crime series, “Homicide Hunter” spotlight’s Kenda’s recollections of cases he investigated while a Colorado Springs detective. One of those involved the shooting of Lovato, a mother of five, by Carroll, then 28, following a night of drinking.
On the manslaughter count, Carroll served several years in prison.
A production team visited Pueblo last summer, during which time Carroll was interviewed for the piece. This particular “Justified” episode is notable in that it is one of the few to feature an interview with the perpetrator of the crime being featured.
While serving time, Carroll converted to Christianity. He has served as senior pastor at Victory Life Ministries for nearly two decades.
Knowing the nature of “Homicide Hunter,” Carroll is aware that he likely won’t be portrayed in a positive light, despite the life-affirming changes he made following that tragic event in 1993.
He nonetheless agreed to participate in hopes that others might learn from his past errors.
“They were going to do the piece whether I took part or not,” Carroll said. “And I really believe they are going to make me look real bad.
“The reason I did the interview is that even if it makes me look bad, it shows what alcohol and gangs and drugs can get you, and to see what God can bring you from.
“It’s not good for me but it just might reach somebody that’s going through that.”
Carroll always has been upfront about his turbulent past, using it as an example of the power of God to restore hearts. It is this real-life testimony that has inspired many walking in Carroll’s shoes to choose another path.
Teila Tankersley, Carroll’s sister and a longtime neighbor of Lovato, the murdered woman, said that while some of Carroll’s friends cautioned him about appearing on the program, others were more encouraging.
“Some friends told him, ‘The press is going to stomp on everything you’ve touched and slap your past in front of you, causing others to think that you are simply hiding behind a jailhouse conversion.’
“But others said that his story confirms the transformation that God can have on a person and that because of it, many in Pueblo are turning their lives around thanks to his ministry.”
It is Tankersley’s hope that the episode featuring her brother inspires hope rather than alarm.
“Pastor Carroll never wanted anyone to feel that he had anything to hide. His past has actually become his testimony.”
Carroll, whose life story appeared in the biography “Torn Apart/Restored,” has been active in combatting gang activity in Pueblo, among other outreaches.
