He had siblings Hermon Wade Howell and Billy Max Howell. Tony Voyles died at age 43 years old on April 20, 2003 at Tony Died in Tigertown near LSU IN Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Easter Sunday 2003. in Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish County, LA, and was buried at Friendship Cemetery in Geneva, Geneva County, AL.

  • Introduction

    Tony had a great personality. He loved playing guitar and was the best amateur guitar picker I have ever heard pick a guitar. Chet Atkins style picker. He played a Red Gibbon 335 and sang. He wrote many songs ahis favorite country singer was Merle Haggard. Tony sounded much like Merle. He played in bands across the south and up to Nashville. Country was not the only music he liked to play. He loved rock n roll, from the 50's to the '70's. Tony started playing by ear when was 5 years old. He grew up in Geneva, Alabama with his mother Pat and they lived with close by Pat's brothers. Bill, Jerome and Herman Howell. His father was Bruce Voyles but left when Tony was 2 years old. His uncles were the father figures in his life. That's where he got his interest in playing guitar. He played all the time. He came to Baton Rouge in the early 90's with a band playing a circuit. Met and married his wife Tracy Blocker. He found musicians in the area to form a band with and played music every weekend. He met and played with local big name musicians like Buddy Roy, Dick Freeman and John Fred of John Fred and the Playboys. Tony played and recorded studio with John Fred on his last recording in the 90's. Tony had heart problems and passed away April 20, 2003.

    Tony's profession was a musician. He could play many instruments. He sat at my piano and played like he had taken lessons for years. Never had any formal music lessons. He had a gift! And a great gift he had! Loved to entertain and make people happy!
