Vera Allison was my great grandmother
My Great Grandmother was a remarkable woman. She was the toughest woman I had and have to date, ever know. She had three children, all boys; Charles, Gene and Clancy. She would bury all three of them, and two husbands, and her mother in her lifetime. She had several grandchildren, and a few great grandchildren; family was very important to her. She made sure we knew where we came from, our history, through pictures and lots of stories. Making sure each grandchild was enrolled in the tribe upon birth (She was part of the Cherokee Nation). She and her last husband Lee Allison always kept a garden, and worked this until it became too unsafe due to age; she found solace in the process of growing, and in creating. She made he most beautiful quilts, which was amazing, because later in life she had one glass eye and poor sight in the other. It did not stop her from making gorgeous, colorful intricate hand made quilts. She would put them
Over saw horses in her back bedroom and sew. She made many, sold many and gave them as gifts; a treasured item in our family. She also played the organ, though never properly trained, she loved to play and sing old hymns. She stayed in her home, and took care of herself and her husband well into her late 80’s, until he developed Alzheimer’s, and fell; causing an injury that would lead to his death. She stayed in her house, till just a few weeks before her death; where she passed away in a care facility.
