Walter Bretherton was born in 1872 to Joseph Bretherton and Ann (Robertson) Bretherton, and had siblings Joseph Bretherton, Francis Reginald Bretherton, John Bretherton, Richard Bartholomew Bretherton, Thomas Bretherton, Peter Bretherton, and Elizabeth Ellen (Bretherton) Slack. He was in a relationship with Ethel Kate (McEwan) Bretherton, and had children Raymond John Bretherton and Alma Jean (Bretherton) Clarke. Walter Bretherton died at age 67 years old on November 7, 1940 at Croxton in Northcote, City of Darebin County, VIC Australia, and was buried at Fawkner Memorial Park 1187 Sydney Rd, in Hadfield, City of Moreland County.

Still seaworthy, under partial sail, and with one lifeboat missing, what happened on her is still a mystery.
