    Wilbert Edwin Till was born on June 25, 1920, in Pennsylvania to Frank Oscar Till (1883-1952) and Ellen Kristina Eckstrom (1889-1950), both of whom were Swedish immigrants. He had several siblings, including Mildred E Till (1911-1978), Evelyn Till (1913-), Henry Carl Frederick Till (1915-1996), Ralph Oscar Till (1918-1999), Lillian Anna Till (1922-2002), and Clifford A Till (1925-1940). Around 1925, the Till family moved to Jamestown, Chautauqua, New York, where Wilbert spent most of his life. On March 5, 1942, he enlisted in the military at Fort Niagara Youngstown, New York, and served for just over three years before his discharge on September 27, 1945, at the end of World War II. Wilbert was married to Catherine Adeline "Kitty" Jader (1920-1992), and together they had two children, including a son named Barry Till, born in 1954.
