Civil Rights Figure. It is believed by many that his murder was the catalyst that started the American civil rights movement. A young African-American native of Chicago, Illinois, while visiting relatives in Mississippi, not understanding the profundity of racism there, accepted a dare to address an attractive white woman in a grocery store. He went in, bought some candy, and on the way out allegedly said "bye, baby." One observer claimed he had only whistled at her. A couple of days later, the woman's husband and his brother-in-law took him from the home he was visiting and drove him to the Tallahatchie River where they made him strip, beat him, gouged out one of his eyes and shot him in the head. They threw his body, with a 75 lb. fan attached, into the river. When his body was recovered, he was so badly disfigured that he could only be identified by an initialed ring. Authorities wanted to bury him quickly, but his mother requested that he be sent back to Chicago. When she saw him, she tearfully decided to have an open casket funeral so that the public could see what murderers had done to her only son. When a picture of his corpse was published in "Jet" magazine, black Americans collectively were indignant about the brutality. Emmett's killers were acquitted by a Mississippi jury, and both black America as well as major newspapers throughout the country condemned these outcomes, which became a catalyst for the youth of the 1950s to pursue the civil rights efforts of the 1960s.
Gilbert John Till was born on May 16, 1909 in Springfield, Essex, New Jersey, United States to parents John "Samuel" Till (1865-1932) and Helene Sofie "Sophie" Kraft (1870-1952).
He later moved to Springfield, Union, New Jersey and Livingston, Essex, New Jersey. On September 1, 1931 he married
Dorothy Mae Rosenthal (1912–1993) in Roseland, Essex, New Jersey, USA. The couple lived in Newark and Montclair, Essex, New Jersey and had a son together.
At the time of his registration for the draft on October 16, 1940, he was residing in East Orange, New Jersey, and employed by the International Harvester Company.
Gilbert enlisted in the Navy on August 31, 1942, and was assigned to the Bluebird, designated as AM-72. The Bluebird was a minesweeper ship that served during World War II, performing mine-clearing operations in various locations. Gilbert served aboard the Bluebird until his muster date on July 31, 1943.
He was discharged on October 10, 1945, after serving in the Navy for over three years.
Wilbert Edwin Till was born on June 25, 1920, in Pennsylvania to Frank Oscar Till (1883-1952) and Ellen Kristina Eckstrom (1889-1950), both of whom were Swedish immigrants. He had several siblings, including Mildred E Till (1911-1978), Evelyn Till (1913-), Henry Carl Frederick Till (1915-1996), Ralph Oscar Till (1918-1999), Lillian Anna Till (1922-2002), and Clifford A Till (1925-1940).
Around 1925, the Till family moved to Jamestown, Chautauqua, New York, where Wilbert spent most of his life. On March 5, 1942, he enlisted in the military at Fort Niagara Youngstown, New York, and served for just over three years before his discharge on September 27, 1945, at the end of World War II.
Wilbert was married to Catherine Adeline "Kitty" Jader (1920-1992), and together they had two children, including a son named Barry Till, born in 1954.
