    William Alton Beatley was born on January 10, 1926 in Gonyon North, Virginia to parents William L Beatley and Minnie E Hammock. He was the oldest child with younger siblings James Irving and Bettie L, Joy Lee, and Robert Beatley. They grew up in Fairfield, Northumberland, Virginia, USA. He registered for the draft in 1944 in Gonyon, Northumberland, Virginia, at the age of 18. William Beatley married Mary Christian Ridout on June 26, 1948 in Pasquotank, North Carolina, USA. At the time he was 22 years old and she was 19 years old. The couple had a daughter together, Julia Warren Beatley. After registering for the draft, Beatley was enlisted in the Army as a Private on April 10, 1944, at Fort George G Meade, Maryland. He was part of a group of enlisted men known as Selectees. He served as a Private during his military service and was discharged on April 13, 1946, after the end of World War II.

William Alton Beatley Sr., 70, of Richmond, died Saturday, June 8, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Mary Christian Ridout Beatley; three children and their spouses, Julia B. and Al H. Kent, Evelyn B. and Ronald W. Lloyd, and William A. Jr. and Frances C. Beatley; five grandchildren, Mary A. Kent, Daniel H. Kent, Waylon C. Lloyd, William A. Beatley III, and Benjamin W. Beatley; two brothers, J. Irvin Beatley and Robert E. Beatley M.D.; and two sisters, Betty Kidd and Ivy Hazelgrove.

Mr. Beatley was a veteran of WW I and was awarded the bronze star. He was an active member of the Virginia Defense Force.

He founded Beatley Equipment Company and was its president until his retirement in 1987.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Central Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, June 10 in Olivet Presbyterian Church Cemetery, New Kent. Memorial gifts may be made to Children's Hospital or Goochland Volunteer Fire Dept. Co. # 1.
