William Augustus Selvidge 1861 - 1927

William Augustus Selvidge of Williamstown Australia was born on July 4, 1861 in Williamstown, City of Hobsons Bay County, VIC to Mary Ann (Boyt) Selvidge and William Selvidge. He married Catherine Elizabeth (Fitzpatrick) Selvidge, and had children Ethel Teresa Selvidge, Catherine Matilda (Selvidge) Mcwatt, Agnes Mary (Selvidge) Jamieson, Evelyn Margaret (Selvidge) Campbell, and Michael James Selvidge. William Selvidge died at age 66 years old on July 21, 1927 in Williamstown, and was buried at Williamstown Cemetery Champion Rd, in Williamstown.

In 1861, in the year that William Augustus Selvidge was born, on August 5th, in order to help pay for the Civil War, the Federal government instituted the first income tax in the United States. The Revenue Act of 1861 was rescinded in 1862 but from 1861 through 1862, a flat tax was charged - 3% - on all income over $800, which included only 3% of households. In 1862, a broader tax was enacted.

In 1881, when he was 20 years old, on October 26th, the "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" happened in Tombstone, Arizona. The gunfight lasted only 30 seconds - the Earps and Doc Holliday on one side and the "Cowboys" on the other side. The McLaury brothers and Billy Clanton of the Cowboys were killed. Two of the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday were wounded.
