William Beel 1867 - 1948

William Beel of VIC Australia was born on May 10, 1867 in Beechworth, Indigo Shire County. He was married to Lily Eliza (Elmer) Beel in 1896, and had children William Francis Beel, Clarence Vivian Beel, Joseph Elmer Beel, Harriett Etta Mary Beel, Lancelot Ernest Beel, and Ronald James Beel. William Beel died at age 80 years old on April 19, 1948.

In 1867, in the year that William Beel was born, on March 30th, Alaska was bought by the US from Russia for $7.2 million dollars, which worked out to about 2 cents per acre. The newspapers called it "Seward's Folly" because United States Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated the purchase and Alaska was seen as frozen, useless land.
