In 1850, in the year that William Hamilton Robert Keightley was born, on July 10th, President Millard Fillmore - previously Vice-President to Zachary Taylor - became the 13th President of the United States. Taylor had become ill with a still unknown intestinal ailment on July 4th and died on July 9th as a result. He had been a little over a year into his term.

In 1860, at the age of just 10 years old, William Hamilton was alive when on February 26th, near Eureka California, white settlers attacked a tribe of Wiyot Indians on Indian Island. Over 60 women, children and older people died. Bret Harte - a writer and friend of Mark Twain - reported the news about the massacre to the papers in San Francisco.
