  • Introduction

Great Southern Advocate. Korumburra. 8th November 1928. - FATAL ACCIDENT. Mr. W. H. C. Holmes Killed. In a collision on the Reservoir hill road on Tuesday afternoon, Mr. W. C. H. Holmes, J. P., was fatally injured, and died a few minutes after removal to the hospital. About two o'clock Mr. W. J. Freeman was driving down the hill in a Baby Austin car. There was a dust storm blowing, and Mr. Freeman says he saw deceased coming along the road on his motor cycle with his head thrown forward as if trying to protect himself from the dust. The cycle was on the wrong side of the road. Deceased tried to get on his right side. The next thing that Mr. Freeman knew was that the car and cycle struck heavily. Deceased was thrown up against the wind screen, which was smashed to pieces. The impact must of been terrific. The front of the car was wrecked, so was the front wheel of the cycle. Mr. Holmes, who was badly cut about the head and face, was tasked to Sister Bowlers hospital, but died within a few minutes. No death has cast a bigger gloom over the town and district than that of Mr. Holmes. Of a bright and happy nature, his was a popular figure everywhere. He was one of the districts early pioneers, having come here with his father and mother when a boy. For years he was a shire councillor, and occupied the presidents chair. For years he has been secretary of the Korumburra A. and P. Society. He was a man who took a keen interest in anything for the welfare of the town and district. Great sympathy is expressed with his wife and family in their sad and sudden loss.
