He married Margaret (Morgan) Hawking, and they were married until death separated them. He had children John Hawking, Elizabeth Eleanor (Hawking) Chaston, Mary Jane (Hawking) Hivon, and Edward Merrifull Hawking. William Hawking died at age 61 years old on March 15, 1899 in Rushworth, Campaspe Shire County, VIC Australia, and was buried at Rushworth Cemetery, Heily St, in Rushworth.

In 1837, in the year that William Henry Hawking was born, on February 25th, in Philadelphia, the Institute for Colored Youth (ICY) - the oldest African-American university in the United States - was founded. It was the first institution for the higher education of black people in the United States. Founded by Quaker Richard Humphreys who gave $10,000 to establish the school, it still exists today - although the location has moved and it has been renamed Cheyney University. Humphreys was concerned about the struggles of free African Americans to make a living.

In 1864, he was 27 years old when on April 22nd, the Coinage Act of 1864 was passed by Congress. It mandated that "In God We Trust" was to be placed on all United States coins and created a 2 cent coin. Later - in 1956 - "In God We Trust" replaced "E Pluribus Unum" - which means out of many, one - as the national motto.
