William Herbert Papley 1883 - 1955

William Herbert Montgomery Papley of Fairfield, VIC Australia was born in 1883 in Dimboola to James Joseph Papley and Louisa Bridget Cadley. He had siblings Beatrice Alice Papley, Leonard Aloyisus Papley, Eileen Philomena Papley, Katherine Monica Papley, Mary Josepha Papley, Alma Victoria Papley, and James Frederick Papley. He married Agnes Maud (Mcalister) Papley, and had children Kathleen May Papley, Frederick Jonothan Papley, William Mcallister Papley, Lochlan Leonard Papley, and Leonard James Papley. William Papley died at age 72 years old in 1955 in Fairfield.

In 1883, in the year that William Herbert Papley was born, on June 16th, children at a children's variety show in Victoria Hall began rushing the stage area and lobby for promised prizes. In the stampede, 183 children of the 1100 present - most of them 3 to 4 years old - were crushed and asphyxiated.

In 1904, when he was 21 years old, the "Teddy's Bear" was first produced. After seeing a political cartoon of President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to kill a clubbed and tied up bear, Jewish Russian immigrant Morris Michtom - who owned a candy shop and sold stuffed animals that he and his wife made at night at the store - made a "Teddy's Bear" and put it in his shop's window. The stuffed bears were an immediate success and Michtom and his wife went on to found the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
