He had siblings Joseph Arthur Bishop, Horace Eddy Bishop, Myrtle Mary Amelia Bishop, Thomas John Bishop, Cecil Ivey Bishop, and Vivian Richard Bishop. He married Clara Bowyer in 1906, and had children William Frank Bishop, Marjorie Clare Bishop, Phillip Lewis Bishop, and Dorothy Mary Durrant. William Bishop died at age 78 years old on December 3, 1960 in Melbourne.

In 1882, in the year that William James Bishop was born, on August 3rd, President Chester Arthur signed the 1882 Immigration Act. "Criminals, the insane, or any person unable to take care of him or herself" were not allowed in the U.S. according to the Act. It also imposed a "head tax" on non-citizens entering the U.S.

In 1931, by the time he was 49 years old, on May 1st, the Empire State Building opened in New York City. At 1,454 feet (including the roof and antenna), it was the tallest building in the world until the World Trade Center's North Tower was built in 1970. (It is now the 34th tallest.)
