He married Fanny Gidley Colwell in 1884, and had children Hilda Blanche Colwell, William Charles Colwell, Mary Emma Colwell, Julia Myra Colwell, Elsie May Colwell, Vera Colwell Mills, James Edward Colwell, Charles Colwell, Hazel Colwell, and Lilian Colwell. William Colwell died at age 61 years old on October 8, 1917 in Creswick.
