William John Spilsbury 1877 - 1942

William John Spilsbury of Prahran, City of Stonnington County, VIC Australia was born in 1877 in Albury, City of Albury County, NSW to Lewis Spilsbury and Emily Beechey Spilsbury. He had siblings Edith Emily Spilsbury, Hannah Eliza (Spilsbury) Hinkley, Lettie Maria Spilsbury, Lewis Richard Spilsbury, Alice Matilda (Spilsbury) Bermingham, Sarah Ann (Spilsbury) Lewis, Amy Maude (Spilsbury) Henriksen, and George Albert Spilsbury. He married Ethel May (Pulham) Spilsbury in 1903, and had children William George Spilsbury, Albert John Spilsbury, Gladys May Spilsbury, and Sylvia May Spilsbury Licence. William Spilsbury died at age 65 years old in 1942 in Prahran, City of Stonnington County, VIC.

In 1877, in the year that William John Spilsbury was born, on March 2nd, the U.S. presidential election of 1876 was ended with the selection of Rutherford B. Hayes as the winner. Samuel J. Tilden had won the popular vote in November 1876 but 20 votes in the electoral college were in dispute. An informal agreement was made in which Hayes agreed to remove federal troops from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, ending Reconstruction in the South. So, on March 4th, Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th President of the United States.

In 1883, William was just 6 years old when on June 16th, children at a children's variety show in Victoria Hall began rushing the stage area and lobby for promised prizes. In the stampede, 183 children of the 1100 present - most of them 3 to 4 years old - were crushed and asphyxiated.
