He married Lucinda Amelia (Teague) Johnson-Hamilton in 1884, and had children John William Teague Johnson, Ruby Victoria Kathleen Johnson, Ellison Eric Johnson, Herbert Edgar Johnson, Annie Johnson, Jack Lindsay Johnson, Ada Lucy Beatrice Johnson, Dorothy Smith Johnson, and Norma Edna (Johnson) Coombe-Beyer. William Johnson died at age 43 years old on February 8, 1903 at Blue Mountain in Trentham, and was buried at Raywood Cemetery, in Greater Bendigo City, Victoria,.

    The Bendigo Independent. Tuesday 10th February 1903. Our Raywood correspondent writes :- Mr. W. Johnson, who has been ailing for some considerable time, died at his brother's residence at Trentham on Sunday. The corpse was brought to Raywood yesterday by the mid-day train, and will be buried in the Raywood Cemetery this afternoon. The deceased leaves a widow and a family of six children to be cared for.
