    His grave inscription says “our loss,his eternal gain” He was in the sunken road near Beaumont- hamel on 1st July 1916 at the start of the battle of the Somme .his battalion was by a man named marlin who wrote a book about filming in the war and part is about the sunken road and videos of this were recently used in the documentary “they shall not grow old “. He was 19 yrs old when he died which is very young .

He was fighting for the Lancashire fusiliers and was killed in the start of the Somme battle in the morning between 7 am and 8:30 am on 1 st of July 1916. He was 19 years old and his rank in the army was a private. His parents were James and Elizabeth Lonsdale and they lived at 10, Goodwin street Salford , Manchester
