William Welshman 1827 - 1898

William Welshman was born on December 6, 1827 at Downpatrick in Down County Northern Ireland to Ann Nancy (Nesbitt) Welshman and Arthur John Welshman. He was in a relationship with Charlotte (Beggs) Welshman, and had children William Welshman, John Arthur Cromwell Welshman, and Robert Samuel Welshman. William Welshman died at age 70 years old on November 21, 1898 at Hawksbu in South Yarra, Stonnington City County, VIC Australia.

In 1827, in the year that William Welshman was born, Englishman John Walker invented the first friction match, which he named Lucifer. The match consisted of a wooden stick coated with sulphur and tipped with a mixture of sulphide of antimony, chlorate of potash, and gum. A box of 50 matches was one shilling and came with folded sandpaper to use to strike a match.

In 1857, at the age of 30 years old, William was alive when on March 4th, James Buchanan became the 15th President of the United States. Called a "doughface" by many - a Northerner with Southern sympathies - he said that he would only serve one term and he did what he said.
