Robert Samuel Welshman 1863 - 1922

Robert Samuel Welshman was born in 1863 in Yackandandah, Indigo Shire County, VIC Australia to William Welshman and Charlotte (Beggs) Welshman, and had siblings John Arthur Cromwell Welshman and William Welshman. He married Catherine (Hardingham) Welshman, and died at age 58 years old in August 1922. Robert Welshman was buried at St Kilda Cemetery in St Kilda East, Port Phillip City County.

In 1863, in the year that Robert Samuel Welshman was born, on January 1st, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation made the abolition of slavery in the Confederate states an official war goal. It also immediately freed 50,000 slaves, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced into Confederate states. The Proclamation wasn't a Congressional law - it was an Executive Order.

In 1898, when he was 35 years old, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.
