Willie Edgar Sanders 1877 - 1960

Willie Edgar Sanders was born in 1877. He married Ollie Jane Lunsford on October 6, 1920 in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas United States and they later divorced. They had children Bertha Lee Sanders, Bettie Jean Sanders, and Cathalene Ann Sanders. He also married Ellen Asseminitie Gazaway, and they were married until Ellen's death in 1922. They had children John Edgar Sanders and Ruby May Sanders. Willie Sanders died at age 83 years old in 1960 in Okemah, Okfuskee County, Oklahoma United States.

In 1877, in the year that Willie Edgar Sanders was born, on March 2nd, the U.S. presidential election of 1876 was ended with the selection of Rutherford B. Hayes as the winner. Samuel J. Tilden had won the popular vote in November 1876 but 20 votes in the electoral college were in dispute. An informal agreement was made in which Hayes agreed to remove federal troops from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, ending Reconstruction in the South. So, on March 4th, Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th President of the United States.

Called the "Unassigned Lands," part or all of 6 counties in Oklahoma were up for grabs. By the end of the day, Oklahoma City and Guthrie were created - each with about 10,000 inhabitants.
