Lee Barnett Gilliland was born on October 23, 1957 in Greenville, Mississippi to parents John Campbell Gilliland Jr, MD (1932-1988) and Carole Anne Hart (1935-1993). He had two siblings including Christine Gilliland who was born ten years after Lee in 1967. He also had one half sibling, Dabney Parrish Gilliland II (1953-2007).
