Barbra (Barbara) Ann (Cooley) Bettis
Barbara Ann "Cooley" Seated in 1935-37?: Do you recognize these children...could they be other adoptees just as my Mother Barbara was. Her DOB is given as 10/21/1931 (?) Not positive this is true. Locations would be PA, WV or Ohio. Looking for Birth Family! Thank you, Suzan, Barbara's daughter. Update: The boy in the back is Robert Hitchens from Wheeling, WV. His Uncle Herbert M Cooley adopted my mother Barbara. He does not remember the other children in the photo.

1936 they're all so cute (especially the boy in the center!) but there seems to be an adoption mystery in this photo. Can you help?
My Grandparents- Herbert M Cooley and Bonnie Grace Cooley adopted Mother, but would never divulge any information...said they were taking it to the grave. They did!

The young boy in the back is Robert Hitchins adoptive "cousin" to my mother Barbara. Photo taken approximately 1936.

That is so sad....even adopted children should know where their roots are...even though they consider the adoptive family their own....

Yes, and I know many who feel the same way...I wasn't referring to a child finding their birth parents...only the roots....

The little boy in the center and the girl on the right might be related. They have the same nose.

I was thinking the same thing. They have the same skin tone

It appears to me, personal opinion only, that the four children on the left clustered somewhat "together" are related: two boys and two girls. The adopted child is the girl who is on the far right and has a darker complexion, has darker hair and is heavier.

The relative making the inquiry should get a DNA test. Could help her locate blood relatives

Growing up in a large family the darker children are probably the first or the last and each of the others is in between.

Back in the1940s and earlier... Having a child without a husband was detrimental to the entire family. First to the child who would be considered a b****** and treated badly all his life to the unwed mother who would be considered a w**** and a loose woman...limiting her future for a husband or job...many unwed mother's committed suicide because they couldn't bear the shame. My grand mother found herself pregnant at 15. Her mother or my great grandmother posed as pregnant for 9months to save her daughter's reputation. The child, my father, grew up thinking he had a very loving and wonderful big sister....when she passed in her fortys he was told the truth. Whole families were affected by the stigma.....thank goodness things have changed since then. My dad is now 85.

All look Hungry except one of them sorry just my Humor.
So sad. My mom was adopted too. She isn't alive. But she did want to know who her biological family was. It's very hard to track things down like this. I told her I would finish her story some day. Hopefully I will sometime. Never give up the search
I did my Dna test on Ancestry. Not my mother's though.
The little boy and girl in the back ( could be siblings)? The one with dark hair
The little boy with glasses on looks like he is that girls sibling. The girl with dark hair. With the white socks on.

I'm interested in the girl on the end. With dark hair. The bigger girl.
The girl standing up in the back with blonde hair looks like a cousin of mine? .
