Goldman ordered the capital sentence a month after a jury deadlocked over a life-or-death punishment, McLaughlin was previously convicted of first-degree murder, rape, and armed criminal action. The jury found that the murder was "outrageously and wantonly vile, horrible and inhuman." See an account of the actual trial at With jury divided, judge opts for death sentence.
