Bill Destefani
William's father was William Guglielmo Destefani (1877-1960), born Italy, and his mother was Adeline Marie Mungai (1891-1986), born Bakersfield CA. In the 1930 federal census, Bill (age 28) was living with his parents in Kern county CA Also in the household were siblings The eldest Anne, then Elmo, Albert "Jocko" and Melvin. They were farmers. William, or Bill, married Jewell Theresa Burts (1924-1982) on April 12, 1952 in Bakersfield, Kern County, Calif. They had no children. He was murdered by Bakersfield Sheriff reserves called THE CORPORATION when he was 73 years old. They must have known his habit of leaving the house early 5:30 A.M.to go to the Destefani Bros. Farm in Old River. I am his niece; Elmo was my father. I write this today Feb 2025 to make sure the details of his relatives are correct. I am 83 years old next month. Without knowing the facts, I think I know what happened. He was known for bragging at bars when he visited friends, that he had a $1,000.00 collectors bill in his wallet. He had a girlfriend, whom I never met, and I was told he'd tell her to get his money out of his safe in the garage. Knowing his personality, I can imagine that these guys probably threated him to open his safe. I can see my uncle refusing and cussing them...and one of them probably got angry and reacted and shot him.. Then they fled in fear because they didn't even take his wallet. They went to jail for also killing 2 other men.

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
