Seeing the father's shirt, I think this family was from western Poland. The son's shirt with the puffy sleeves and very ornate cuffs, and the mother's and one of the daughters' dresses with the very decorated "ribbons" down the front of the skirt also appear to be of more Polish influence. Many Germans lived in Poland in the mid 1800's, and long before. They had started making these migrations because of the Reformation, and took place between 1550 or so, to the mid 1800's. The Reformation caused a massive upheaval in Europe, the intensity of which was grossly understated in our education of the period. The War of 1848 caused a huge emigration from Germany, and surrounding countries. I'm not sure what that war was about, it's something I still have to study.
