Christian Ludolph " Buddy" Ebsen Jr. was born to Christian Ludolf Ebsen Sr. (1872 - 1951) and Frances W. Wendt (1882 - 1974). His father was born in Germany and his mother was born in Latvia. Buddy had four sisters: Helga (1902 - 1994), Norma (1904 - 1996), Vilma (1911 - 2007) and Leslie Ebsen (1913 - 1948).
Buddy Ebsen first married Ruth Margaret McCambridge (1904 - 1968) on July 10, 1933, in Harrison, New York. They had one child, Elizabeth Ann "Libby" Ebsen (1936 - 2002).
Buddy then married Nancy Daughaday Wolcott (1918 - 2008) on September 6, 1945. They had seven children, two sons, one of whom was Christian Ebsen III (1946 - 1946) and five daughters, one of whom was Susannah Dustin Ebsen (1947 - 2019).
