I suppose the "France" was where he died. Thank you for getting this posted. I don't know what he is wearing over his kilt. So many Scottish boys died in that horrible war. There stories do need to be told.
Charles was born in the Gorbals in the borough of hutchistown Glasgow on 9th August 1896. Son on John Mulholland and Elizabeth Findlay, they moved to Gartcosh and lived in 5 Bishop Place ghartcosh. he had 6 siblings, Jane Ford Mulholland 1882, Annie 1888, John 1889,Isobel 1900, Joseph Oliver 1902 and Thomas 1904 my husbands grandfather.
He was a steal packer, and enlisted to France on 12the September 1915.
He died in and around 18th August 1916, at Contalmaison on fleurs road, around 1200 yards west of Highwood, along with his missing patrol officer captain d brodie, his body was never found. As a family we knew nothing of him apart from this portraint. we found his will at the national archived. we are not sure if his family recived any of his medals in 1921, as his mother and father were dead at this point. we have been unable to trace his older brother Johns family to find out.
