Colonel "Richard" Watts, 91, went home to be with his Lord early Wednesday morning, April 12, 2023, at Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation.

Richard was born on April 24, 1931, in Stokes County to the late Colonel Grant and Ila Young Watts. He was a retired farmer and a member of Palmyra United Methodist Church. Richard was a strawberry and tobacco farmer for 35 years and served on The Energy United Board of Directors for 35 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline Boles Watts.

He is survived by his four children, Grant Watts (Mary), Charlene Whitson (Billy), Wanda Kiser (Sherrill), and Nita Webster (Doyle); seven grandchildren, Frankie Watts, Shannon Tyndall (Donald), Cassie Simpson (Bobby), Sarah Tyndall (Jeremy), Scottie Kiser (Britany), Daniel Webster (Sarah), and Wendi Childress (Sage); 13 great grandchildren, Jesse, John, Haley, Preston, Garrett, Eli, Cole, Emma, Hunter, Faith, Morgan, Emori, and Arthur; sister, Loretta Bowen; and a brother, Hanes Watts (Betty Jo).

There will be an 11 a.m. funeral service held on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Palmyra United Methodist Church with Pastor Kevin Jasper officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 14, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Burroughs Funeral Home.

The family would like to extend a special thank you all of the staff at Oak Forest Health and Rehab for all of the care shown to Richard during his stay.

My parents, Allan and Marie, were devout Christians, and had 10 children. They were both school teachers, but Mom quit teaching at public school after marriage. But both Mom and Dad home-schooled us all - starting when I was in 1st grade - that's when they came to the decision to home-school us. Dad earned an income through being an English teacher here in Traverse City, for man years. Dad started some Bible meetings that took place in the homes of friends of ours and in our own. He was the main teacher in it, and it was in a discoursing style - he would talk about spiritual things with the fathers of the families, each time, and all the children of the families would sit and listen to it all.
